ABOUT ST.FRANCIS XAVIER MAJOR SEMINARY

St Francis Xavier Major Seminary was established in 1983 by a decision of the Catholic - Bishops' Conference of Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei made in 1982. It is a Diocesan Seminary under the direct jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Singapore. From 1983 - July 1987, the Major Seminary operated at the premises of the Minor Seminary at Upper Serangoon Road. In August 1987, it moved to the present location at 199 Ponggol Seventeenth avenue. It was officially opened and blessed on 28 January 1988 by Archbishop Gregory Yong. This seminary is also affiliated to the Pontificia Universitas Urbaniana. Under the terms of the affiliation, students who complete the full course in philosophy and theology can sit for the Baccalaureate in Theology.

In the light of the Seminary's Mission Statement "Fidelity to our identity as Teacher, Minister and Leader through Integral formation and growth In pastoral charity and Apostolic zeal, candidates for the ministerial priesthood in the Catholic Church are given an integral formation which encompasses a philosophical and theological education, human, spiritual and pastoral formation. Through this holistic formation, seminarians will be imbued with a mature faith in Christ expressed in an upright and moral life, and zeal for the Church's mission. Effective ministry also requires that our students nurture Christ-like and altruistic qualities of leadership in the priestly ministry.

Besides forming seminarians, the Seminary also provides an opportunity for ongoing religious education to the religious and laity so that they too can collaborate effectively in the one mission of the Church.

The Seminary is affiliated to the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, the academic institution belonging to the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples.
